Definición y origen del botón

La Real Academia Española define al botón como pieza pequeña de metal, hueso, nácar u otra materia, forrada de tela o sin forrar, que se pone en los vestidos para que, entrando en el ojal, los abroche y asegure. También se pone por adorno.

El botón fue utilizado desde la prehistoria pero fabricado en serie desde el siglo XII. Estuvo muy presente en el vestuario masculino.

Según algunas investigaciones, los que se usaron en los comienzos eran conchas de moluscos, talladas y perforadas. Fueron encontrados en el valle del Indo y datan del año 2000 a.C.

Los Griegos y los Romanos usaron los botones solamente para adornar sus túnicas y vestidos.

Durante la Edad Media se hacían de cuerno o de cristal y solamente la gente que poseía riquezas podía darse el lujo de llevarlos. En el siglo XIII se empezaron a poner de moda, conjuntamente con otros adornos de vestir, tales como prendedores y camafeos.

En 1350 los cruzados lo trajeron a Europa. Anteriormente los ricos se ataban la ropa con corchetes , y los más pobres usaban nudos o ganchos.
